Rome, Italy, January 23, 2025 – The LIFE PROMETHEUS project , coordinated by the Università Politecnica delle Marche (UNIVPM) and co-financed by the EU LIFE+ Funding Programme, was prominently featured at a workshop organized by SPA/RAC (Specially Protected Areas and Biological Diversity Protocol) in Rome, Italy, on January 23, 2025. The workshop focused on the invasive blue crab species in the Mediterranean and its ecological impact.
The event brought together 43 participants from 16 countries, including scientists, policymakers, and environmental experts, to discuss strategies for managing non-indigenous species (NIS) in the region. During the workshop, MER, a key partner of LIFE PROMETHEUS, had the opportunity to moderate a session on measures to reduce new introductions of invasive species and improve their control and eradication.
The LIFE PROMETHEUS project presented its ongoing efforts and key actions in invasive species management, particularly focusing on the Mediterranean’s blue crab issue. The project aims to combat NIS through sustainable fisheries practices and promoting the consumption of invasive species, thus helping mitigate their environmental impact.
This workshop served as an important platform for international collaboration and the sharing of knowledge on best practices for managing invasive species in the Mediterranean, reinforcing LIFE PROMETHEUS’s commitment to protecting the region’s marine biodiversity.
