Limassol, Cyprus, November 20, 2024 – The LIFE PROMETHEUS project , coordinated by the Università Politecnica delle Marche (UNIVPM) and co-financed by the EU LIFE+ Funding Programme, organized a workshop on elasmobranch conservation for recreational fishers at the Cyprus University of Technology in Limassol on November 20, 2024.
The workshop, attended by 20 recreational surfcasting fishers, focused on the conservation of guitarfish, a species often caught as bycatch in the region due to overlapping habitats with fishing areas. The two-hour session covered a range of important topics, including an overview of elasmobranch species (sharks, rays, and skates), current Mediterranean and Cypriot legislation on species protection, and safe handling techniques. Fishers were also educated on how to report sightings of these species, acting as citizen scientists.
The session also introduced participants to the LIFE PROMETHEUS project, which seeks to reduce the bycatch of elasmobranchs in recreational fishing. One key action discussed was the testing of deterrent devices in fishing gear, designed to reduce unintended catches of vulnerable species. The fishers expressed strong support for the project, showing willingness to actively contribute to its goals and participate in ongoing conservation efforts.
This workshop represents an important step in fostering collaboration between scientists, conservationists, and the fishing community to ensure the sustainability of marine ecosystems and protect elasmobranch populations in the Mediterranean.
